    Webinar:

PHIUS+ 2018: The Affordable Path to NET ZERO

    Wednesday, May 8, 2019

    10am PT / 11am MT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET

Earn 1 CPHC CEU, 1 AIA LU

    Presenter: Katrin Klingenberg, Dipl.-Ing., M-Arch, CPHC®

    Executive Director of PHIUS

The new PHIUS+2018 Passive Building Standard update puts projects on an efficient and affordable glide path to zero. It now aligns with the Architecture 2030 challenge. New source energy rules will have the largest effect on building design as they now open up more design and cost optimization options for project teams while also nudging the teams along on the path to zero. We will discuss the specifics of the changes to PHIUS+2018 and their effects on the design for different building typologies (single and multi family).

In 2003 Ms. Klingenberg designed and completed the first home to meet passive house standards in the United States. Since then, she has designed and consulted on numerous successful passive house and building projects across North America’s varied climate zones. In 2007 Ms. Klingenberg co-founded the Passive House Institute US, shifting the focus of her work towards research and education. In addition to her executive role at PHIUS, she directs curriculum development for the PHIUS Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) training. She also directs the technical and research programs at PHIUS, which, under her leadership, has trained over 3,000 building professionals in passive building standards. PHIUS has become the leading passive building research and information provider in North America and, in 2015, released the PHIUS+ 2015 climate-specific passive building standard, the only one of its kind in the world. The PHIUS+2018 update goes into effect in March of 2019. Ms. Klingenberg has written and co-authored numerous magazine articles and made several book contributions. She has presented nationally and internationally on the topic of passive building science. Her most recent publications: the co-authored chapter Passive Building and Bioclimatic Architecture in "Handbook of Energy Efficiency in Buildings", Elsevier 2018; the book chapter Passive House in "Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology", Springer 2012, updated in 2018; Zero Energy & Carbon Buildings Based on Climate Specific Passive Building Standards for North America, Journal of Building Physics 2016; and the U.S. Department of Energy, Building Technologies Office, Building America Program Report Climate-Specific Passive Building Standards, NREL 2015. In 2015 she won the Woman in Sustainability Leadership Award (WSLA2015). 2017 she was one of 12 women leaders selected from around the world for the Global Ambassador Program of Vital Voices in Chicago.

    Learning objectives: Attendees will learn...

    1. About the differences between PHIUS+2015 and 2018 passive building standards

    2. About how the new standard now aligns with and facilitates the zero energy building goal

    3. About what the standard update means for single family passive building design

    4. About what the standard update means for multifamily passive building design
